March Madness Chagrin River Ohio

I headed out today to fish some of the old stomping grounds. I arrived on the Chagrin at one of my favorite spots only to find it full of fish. We had a great day with the water still stained and a bit high. We were swinging some big scalpins and big chart Zonkers. We didn't kill any fish today we just enjoyed the great thrill of having a big silver smash a fly on the swing. For those guys who have a hard time fishing muddy water up size the offering. Keep the reels screaming

Fishing Ohio March Madness

I headed out Sunday with a great bunch of guys and we had a great day. The hot color for me was Chart anything. I did not attach any pics yet but they will soon be arriving. Well it rained almost all night last night but we decided to head out far East. We hit Walnut first thing and found a hole wide open and not a person around. Dennis and I started to hit the hole and we both landed about seven. During the course of the morning I also hooked a Russian and smacked the same guy in the side of the head with my rod. I actually hooked the same guy twice until he and his gang left empty handed. I don't know why this guy wanted to get that close but he learned very quickly. To the older guy I left my spot too I hope you did well. We fished for almost three hours on Walnut and then left. We headed to Elk and hit the access area. I found one person fishing above the mud hole so I floated some brown trout eggs. I landed six more on Elk. It rained almost all morning and when we were leaving Elk at 2:00 the water was coming up. We checked all the tribs going West and found them all up and muddy. I attached a few pics of some fish from today.

We started the day off late. We headed to the local crappie hole around 12:00 and finished at 6. We used all kinds of Mr.Twisters but the most productive was the Chart. We had no bass today but plenty of Crappie and some gills thrown in. The weather was great the company was even better. Keep the reels screaming

Rocky River Ohio

Started out late in the day to put in a late shift. I started at the West Branch and ended up in Lakewood. I hit several different spots with different conditions. I landed 13 fish but many more hook ups. I fished the park section most of the time to find myself in pure heaven. The park system is probably one of the most gorgeous places I found so far to fish by myself. I met a few guys who also were having a good time. I did have the opportunity to meet a real nice ranger who also was an avid steelheader and he gave me some info that helped. Keep the reels screaming

We have been fishing one of the premier rivers in Ohio for the past few days. Its nice to see big fresh fish every day. We managed about 20 today using everything we could throw. The drop backs have been hammering flies on the swing. We also have been using the new vidmar swinging stones. Also Blaine has been producing some nice flies. I have attached a couple of pics. Open Water ( Ohio Waters)

I have not posted in a while but I wanted to get the word out that all the waters are open and fishing well in Ohio. We fished a few tribs from the P.A boarder West. Some rivers are fishing better than others. We managed to get out on Saturday and found a few nice fish. The fish are in the deeper runs and some are on the reds. We used the Vidmar minnow and many other flies to land some nice fish. As of Monday night the waters have become high and muddy. The east side tribs and big rivers feeders clear quicker so hit the feeders if you can.Keep the reels screaming

I wanted to post about a recent trip into the P.A tribs. We fished 20 mile on Sunday with cloudy to clear conditions. We found a bunch of fish in the upper section of the creek. We found fish in runs and in the holes. We used a bunch of different patterns but the most productive was the Pittsburgh Prince. The Pittsburgh was designed and patented by Dennis Vidmar from Screamingreels guide service. John was having a great time on 20 mile along with the rest of us.

Craig,Dave and I fished Elk on Monday 12/28/09. We fished the upper sections above 90 and found fish in the deeper sections and runs. We used Egg Patterns all morning with a bunch of hooks ups and a bunch of fish landed. Almost all the fish were older and have been in the creek for some time. We did catch a female spitting eggs so they are spawning. We fished another section above Follies and found more older fish. I have attached a few pics. Keep the reels screaming.

Wanted to post regarding Steelhead Alley about the flow rates. All the rivers and creeks are up real high today. The rain we received yesterday and during the night pushed all the rates straight up. It will take a few days for the smaller tribs to clear but for the bigger water it will take a while. The far east side tribs will clear quicker. Keep the reels screaming

I started out today on the hunt for Chrome with Jim and Tom. We found a small tributary on the far east side. We fished this trib for about 6 hours landing a bunch of nice fish. We found fish in the holes and fast water. We used all kinds of single egg patterns and a few new patterns developed by Dennis Vidmar. Dennis is an excellent tier and has several flies that produce fish. He also has been developing and experimenting with several realistic flies. We have used them on several trips with great results. Other guide services know Dennis and his ability to tie great flies. We also had the pleasure of fishing with Blane today (Net Boy). It was funny today when I watched several guys attempt to catch a fish in a run and no one had any luck. I looked up stream to see Blane have this fish inhale a Pitt nymph and the fight was on. Blane landed the fish and it was his friend the rest of the day. Another great day to be out fishing on Steelhead Alley. I have attached a few pics. Keep the reels screaming.

We made another run into New York for a few more browns. We fished Oak Orchard in the morning with clear conditions and headed over to 18. Upon our arrival we found that they opened the gates of water to let fresh fish run. We located a nice spot and started hooking fish. We had a great time and I have included a few pictures. Hit the tribs after the rain and had a blast. I took Dominic Devito out for his first steelhead adventure. We headed to a East side trib and found a bunch of fish. He hooked up at least ten times and landed this real nice fish. Dominic has never gone steelhead fishing and has never used a fly rod till today. Our hats are off to you on such a nice job. Well we hit the tribs today and found some nice fish. I took out a new fly guy and on his first day I would say he landed 10 fish plus. It was not scheduled as a fishing trip it was a learning experience. I think we all learned something today. Keep the reels screaming. May that bond grow.

Steelhead Hunting

I took a half a day off yesterday to hunt the Chrome. We hit Elk Creek and found a few fish with no flow. We did manage to hit a few browns on Elk. We then drove to Walnut Creek and found a few fish with no flow. All the places in P.A had fish with no flow and a bunch of guys walking around attempting to catch these fish. I wish I would have run some video of this one guy because he was chasing the fish in the water attempting to get them to bite. Its still early in the season but we need more rain for a few days to move more fish. The lower end of Walnut had a large amount of fish waiting to come up. We then drove West and hit Ohio tribs and they all paid off. I attached a few pics. Keep the reels screaming

CADILLAC - It started out as an average day on the Manistee River for Tim Roller and his charter clients.

Tom Healy of Rockford and his fishing partner, Bob Woodhouse of Grand Rapids, had caught a couple of nice 18- to 20-pound salmon on the sunny, pleasant morning.

About two hours into the trip things changed, but Roller did not know how much.

Fishing a Rapala shad rap No. 8, black on silver, Healy hooked into a pretty nice fish.

"It fought like a tank," said Roller. "It was super strong."

"When I hooked the fish, the first thing it did was run up water and try to jump," said Healy from his Rockford home.

"I don’t know if it was too old, or too big, did not have enough energy, but it just came up and boiled and roiled. I said to Tim, ‘My goodness Tim, that really is a good fish.’"

Roller at first thought it was a salmon. "What else would I think? We were fishing for salmon and I thought it was a salmon," said Roller, who runs the guide service Ultimate Outfitters and is host and producer of "Tim Roller’s Wild Addiction" outdoor show.

After about 15 minutes, the fish was spent, wearing itself out with a tremendous fight. As it started to make it up to the surface of the Manistee, Roller saw a white belly. Roller said he still thought it was a salmon but a "nice silver one." Salmon typically start to turn darker as they are making their runs into the river.

Another look at the fish and Roller noticed spots. He knew it wasn’t a salmon, but he couldn’t comprehend what he was seeing.

"I thought it was a big Atlantic Salmon, but I knew in my mind it wasn’t," Roller said. "I couldn’t comprehend what I was seeing."

Then it clicked.

"I let out a scream. It was a huge brown trout," Roller said. "We had to get a net under it."

Once the fish was in the net, the fishermen started to get an idea of just how big it was. With his Boga grip scale, Roller tried to get a weight on the fish. Although 18 inches of it was still in the water, the fish bottomed out the scale at 30 pounds. Roller measured it at 44 inches long, with a 27-inch girth.

But Healy almost did what many would think unthinkable.

"I am not one to preach to be catch-and-release, but it is truly rare that I don’t release a fish," Healy said.

He reached down to let it go when Roller realized what Healy was thinking and said to Healy, "Don’t you dare."

Healy and Roller said they didn’t believe the fish could be revived, and thoughts of releasing the fish ended.

Roller called a friend of his, charter captain Mark Chmura, who is known for catching big browns on Lake Michigan to get an idea of just how big a fish they were holding. Roller started telling Chmura some of the measurements - and Chmura said he would meet them at the boat launch.

"He pulled off the river to meet us. He had clients with him and he pulled off the river," Roller said.

Chmura had an certified scale to weigh the fish, and it recorded 40 pounds, about four pounds more than the state record 36-pound, 13-ounce brown caught in Frankfort in 2007. At that point, Chmura said they needed to go to his shop in Manistee and put it on another scale. They filled a cooler with water and loaded the fish for the trip to Manistee. "Word spread pretty fast," Roller said. "On the trip over there I had three calls. The DNR was over there, the (U.S) Forest Service - it was non-stop people for five hours. It was crazy the whole time."

Healy said he probably could have heaved the fish out of the cooler only one, maybe two more times.

"It is hard for me to believe," Healy said. "Here I am, an old retired guy up there for a quiet day of fishing and peace.

"To have all of this notoriety - it’s a crazy thing."

DNR Fisheries Biologist Mark Tonello measured and weighed the fish. It tipped the scales at 41-pounds, 7.25 ounces, beating the state record by more than five pounds. The world record currently stands at 40-pounds, 4-ounces and was caught in Arkansas. Healy’s fish is the unofficial world-record brown trout.

"It shattered our existing state record by five pounds," Tonello said. "The old record was 36 pounds, 13 ounces and the new record is 41 pounds, 7 ounces. You expect if a new record’s to be caught, it would just beat the old one by a little bit, but this one is massive."

"This is not only great for the Manistee, but it also puts the spotlight back on Michigan fisheries," Roller said. "This is something positive for the state of Michigan."

"We think this is just another example of what we have to offer here in Michigan," said DNR Communications Representative Bob Gwizdz. "Michigan has world class fisheries, and this appears to be a bona fide world record. Keep the reels Screaming

I wanted to post regarding a recent blog I read. I saw this and found it to be great reading. I also want my readers to know about another great web site for quality info. http://flyandfloatfishing.com/joomla/ I have attached the blog info.

The crisp evenings have gotten a lot of steelhead fisherman excited lately. With the early reports coming in that a few chrome have been seen on the east side, it has got me excited as well. There is nothing I enjoy more than the tug of a steelhead early in the morning. For all those that are new to all of this steelhead talk, I urge you to browse the web for all the content that has been made available by many avid anglers in the steelhead alley. You will find a lot of different perspectives, and a wealth of knowledge from each an every Steelhead Alley website that you seek out.

Whether it is a website that allows forum access to chat it up with other anglers, or websites that are tailored more towards promoting a guide service, I am sure that you will find a lot of information. And if you don’t know something, feel free to ask. There is never a stupid question, and there are many around that would be more than happy to help you along your journey and passion of steelhead fishing here in the Steelhead Alley area. Never forget that everyone has to start somewhere, and we all had to start at the beginning.

Most of you know I am sure, but for those of you that don’t, the Fly and Float Fishing website was faced with a fork in the road this spring. The founder of the website decided to pursue his passion of photography, and looked to pass the reigns of the website to another avid angler. The website has been totally transferred over to the new ownership. Some may know me, others may have heard of me, and even more have never heard my name. But rest assured, that the Fly and Float Fishing Website will continue to prosper. I have 15 years in the Software Development / System Analyst / Quality Assurance field. I played a big part in the conversion of the old FNF website, and I worked behind the scenes with other members of the website to bring the new face lift to fruition. Ever since I was introduced to this thing called steelhead fishing, I noticed a trend on the web. This guy doesn’t like that guy because he is a competing website, or competing guide, etc.. I found it interesting to tell you the truth. You have some that think they are the #1 provider in information, proclaim to be the leaders in the industry, and they think they have such a great website. I am here to tell you that I am sorry to burst your bubble, but the day you think you’re the best, is the day you forgot why you started providing content to others. It also shows in all the other so called websites that you design. Just because you have a computer, some photo editing software, some website design software, and a camcorder doesn’t make you the best and especially not a professional.

I don’t consider Fly and Float Fishing the best, but I claim that we are the most fun, most passionate group of people that I have ever come in contact with, and I enjoy reading all the great material that everyone has provided over the years. Steelhead Fishing Report

I wanted to post regarding the Steelhead Season. We have been getting small numbers of fish staging in P.A for the run. The numbers are not big but the cooler temps and rain this week may send some fish into the tribs. I have been out looking but I have not seen any numbers in Ohio yet. The far East side will get the fish first and then they will move West. I have not posted in a while due to the fact not much to talk about without Chrome. I'm not into writing about my life stories. I was out for a few hour during the morning with the owners of OnebyOne fly rods. These guys make custom rods built to order. They handed me a rod about a month ago and I can't put it down. I will be getting a few more for clients to use real soon. These rods are great and have the feel like no other rod I have ever used. I have used many from several different companies. Some good and some I wouldn't hit a one handed man with. I will post again soon about having these guys make anyone a custom made rod. Below you will find what they made me and how it works. your rod is built on a Sage Z- Axis blank. 11ft 8wt hand built and turned burl cork grip. Struble reel seat with built in fighting butt that holds reel in place. very secure. The guides are top of the line titanium frames with silicone carbide rings. As you now know they are as smooth as it get for casting and fighting fish. The weave is a two part weave with the an under pattern then your name weaved on top of the pattern. We think that rod is as good as it gets for steelhead fishing. We also tested the line rating on the rod with a scientific system to make sure a rod that says it is an 8wt is actually an 8wt. That blank is perfect. We check every blank that way so you are getting the line weight that you think you are. Have you ever had a rod that just would not cast right with the line you were using? The rating on the rod from the factory was probably wrong and the rod just won't perform.

4/18/09 Ohio Cetra Basin Steelheaders

On 4/18/09 Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders had a great opportunity to take a few guest out fishing from the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. We had a great group of guys from O.C.B.S show up and donate their time and experience to show others about our great sport. George Voinovich arrived and received his new steelhead rod after spending a few hours on one of the local Ohio tribs.

We also had other dignitaries fishing with different O.C.B.S members. The groups spread out on many different areas and had a great day. I took out two and included a few pictures. The whole group had a great time and I cant wait to get back out again.I included a few pictures from the day. Keep the reels screaming.

4/19/09 Day Fishing

I had the opportunity to take Keith and Chris Pearcy fishing today. Today was the day Chris would learn to use a fly rod. We started the day slow with instructions and then went to catching. Chris and Keith both hooked and landed a few fish. I have attached the testimonial from Keith about our day. Keep the reels screaming

My son, Chris has been fishing all of his life for bass and salmon with spinning gear. I asked Bob if he could teach him to fly fish for steelhead. The only request that I made of Bob was that Chris catch fish. I bought Chris an 8 wt for his birthday, and trusted Bob to teach him the basics.

The result was that we had a fantastic day of fishing! Bob delivered on everything that I asked for, and Chris caught quite a few steelhead. That being said, I caught more than my share of fish, too.

Being a great guide is more than putting people over fish. Bob gave us just the right amount of advice, then let us fish. If we had questions or needed tackle changes, he was right there, but never in the way. When I look at the pictures of my son and I holding steelhead, I'm struck by the unbridled joy on our faces.

I really could not be more pleased with Bob. Beyond his terrific ability as a guide, he really is good company. I plan to go out again with Bob and my newly minted steelhead addict son.

I wanted to post regarding the recent rains and flows. All the rivers are up but the East side streams in P.A are dropping as I type. Ohio rivers take a few extra days to clear but should be in good shape for the weekend. The feeders for the big rivers clear quicker so keep an eye on them to be clear by Thursday and Friday. Sonny and I headed out this morning for some Steelhead fishing. We headed East with the flow rates prime. We started out first going over the basic techniques and reasons we use these techniques. Sonny first started to go after a few fish and then turned around to find the mother load. We fished for a several hours getting several hookups and LDR's. We also managed to land a few nice fresh Steelhead. I have attached a few pics of Sonny and one of Dennis who was out helping out. Keep the reels screaming. It was a great day today and keeping with my tradition it was a fishing day. My daughter and I headed out for some afternoon fishing. We made a trip to one of the local fishing spots and we found some fish. My daughter hooked an landed 5. We fished next to a guy who was fishing for about 20 minutes with no fish. He left after her second fish. I landed 4 some fresh some old. It was a great day just to spend it with someone you love. Keep the reels screaming.

We received about 2 inches of rain yesterday making all the rivers and creeks milk chocolate. We are in the clear for Monday but Tuesday we will get hit again with more rain. I feel all the rivers in Ohio will need at least 4 days with no rain to become fishable. The east side tribs in P.A should fish Thursday or Friday based on the conditions at this time. The feeders for the Grand River will fish Wednesday or Thursday with no rain. The Grand River in Ohio was giving up good numbers of fish before the rain. The other rivers were fair. I hit a trib in Ohio that runs into the Grand River. We managed to find a nice pod of fish. Not a bunch of fresh fish but still fun. I also wanted to comment on the guys from Maryland. These guys arrive and want to fish. They paid for a license and take legal limits of fish. I see nothing wrong with that. I actually have fished with a couple of these guys and have never found them to be rude. I think we all need to know and undertand that we will always have others fishing around us and to show each other respect. Not just for anglers but for others property. What about knots? Knots that are strong and have great tinsel strength. What knots are best for terminal tackle, meaning joining two lines, tying a hook to a leader and more. Tom Blotzer (OCBS VP) will be happy to show you the knots you need to know.

How about rigging your spinning rod. We have Dave Esner (OCBS Member) on hand to show you what you need to do for float fishing and bottom bouncing.

How about fly fishing? This is a very popular stopping point as many steelheaders have interest in learning how to catch steelhead with a fly rod. Les Ober (OCBS Member) will show you the rigs needed to catch and will explain much more as to how you fish your rigs.

Fly lines and Out Door Gear are very important to steelheaders. Will Turek (Mid-West Spey Schools) will be stationed to show you and talk to you about the different fly lines that are available for convention and Spey fisherman.

Jeff Liskay (Silver Fury Guide Service) will cover the gear you need when you are on the water. To be successful you need the right gear. Often new steelheaders purchase all the wrong gear before they learn what they really need and then have to purchase the right gear. Get it right he first time, Jeff will be able to point you in the right direction and you should be able to purchase the right gear you need.

Both Will and Jeff are spey fishing experts at swing flies. I'm sure they can answer any question you throw at them.

Center Pin fishing has become a popular way of catching steelhead. We see more and more anglers venturing over to fish the PIN. Mike Durkalec (OCBS Member) will be on hand to show and explain how you rig and fish a Center Pin. Mike was one first OH steelheaders to pickup a Pin and uses nothing else.

Backing up Mike will be Joe Santoli (OCBS Member) will cover everything else you need to know about Center Pinning.

I wanted to post about my trip today. We fished a trib in Ohio on the east side. I fished with Wayne Flemming from P.A. We fished a spot that was loaded with fish. We used egg sacks all day and had a great time. Wayne told me that it wasn't all about catching fish today but he just wanted to learn. We arrived to find the slush and cold temps. We fished for a few hours and then sat in the car and kept warm. After warming we then headed back out into the cold water. Wayne was a good student and learned a bunch. I have attached a picture for your viewing pleasure. Ohio streams are almost all fishing except the Grand River and that should fish in a few days if we can stay clear of rain. Keep the reels screaming.

After one year of trying unsuccessfully to catch Steelhead, I decided to get educated on the art of Steelhead fishing. I became a student of Bob Williams from “Screaming Reels” guide service. This was the best thing I’ve done in years. Bob is an excellent teacher who provided me with the overall knowledge of reading the stream, selecting the right equipment and setting up the rod. He also instructed me in line and lure (bait) and most importantly the presentation. There were no hurry-up instructions. His explanations and demonstrations were detailed and easily remembered. Within a few hours, it was like fishing with an old buddy. I will recommend Bob to all my friends. I now have the confidence to go after the “Steelies” and for the first time really enjoy myself.

I wanted to post regarding the new conditions in Ohio. Almost every trib is blown out. The Chagrin mouth opened up and fed Lake Erie around 1700 on 2/10/09. The coast guard cutter went into the Grand River today and it's now feeding Lake Erie.
The feeders in Ohio are still running strong. I made my way up into Burton Ohio today and Silver creek is over it's banks. The Cuyahoga river that was once named the burning river was over its banks. The hill sections of Chardon and Burton still have some snow. We got a bunch more rain tonight and that will feed the rivers and creeks more water. I guess one good thing is that they should all have good numbers of fish. The Chagrin will take almost a week to come down. The Grand will take even longer. Keep the reels screaming.

I wanted to post regarding the fishing conditions as of today 2/4/09. The rivers and creeks are still covered with ice. I will not write about boring stuff that happened years ago. I am not writing a book or telling a long boring story. I write about whats going on today and in the near future. Some guys get on their blogs and tell stupid stories. Lets talk Steelhead and more Steelhead. The weather will be changing this weekend with warmer temps and possibly rain. The weather is also showing temps in the 40's during the days and back down below freezing at night. This will then bring fresh Steelhead into the creeks and rivers during the night. Browns in P.A

The Browns are coming to Erie.

Not those Browns, who played the Steelers at Heinz Field.

In the spring, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will begin resurrecting the Lake Erie brown trout fishery by planting the lake with 42,000 browns that should reach legal creel size by 2010. Another 57,000 will be stocked in 2011.

They call it a "put-grow-and-take" fishery.

"This isn't instead of steelhead, it's in addition to," said commission biologist Chuck Murray. "We'll continue to stock 1 million steelhead every year, but our goal is to also stock 100,000 browns and to have brown trout be 10 percent of our annual Erie stocking program."

Like steelhead, the browns will be 7 to 9 inches when planted to minimize predation by walleyes and northern pike, and to prevent angler harvest. Minimum size in the Erie watershed is 9 inches April 12 through September 1. Stockings will occur in the open lake and near shore.

The commission has stocked browns both for "put and take" and "put-grow-and-take" since 1987, but cut back on numbers as the steelhead program took off. The fish have been German browns, although the commission also stocked the Seeforellen trophy strain in the early 1990s. The 19-pound, 10-ounce state record brown landed on Walnut Creek in April of 2000 most likely represents the peak brown stockings of the mid-1990s, Murray said.

The brown trout fishery is being developed at the urging of the Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association, which wanted to expand open-lake angling opportunities April through October. Wesleyville Conservation Club and 3-C-U Trout Association are partnering in the initiative, with support from Pittsburgh Downriggers and the Pennsylvania Steelhead Association.

"We want to create more of a year-round recreational fishery," said association president and charter captain Pete Alex. "There's a lot of interest in browns because you target them in open water just like steelhead, by downrigging or with Dipsy Divers, lead core line and planer boards."

Browns are also expected to add new interest to Presque Isle Bay -- where Murray said future stockings could occur -- and to enhance shoreline fishing in early fall. Brown trout are fall spawners, but will come in a little earlier than steelhead and probably won't travel quite as far up the tribs, Murray said.

"We expect they'll give anglers early-season action around the near-shore waters of Godfrey and Trout runs. Those are some of the areas where the browns will be stocked."

Murray said there's little chance browns will out-compete steelhead for habitat or food. Although they grow at the same rate as steelhead, browns tend to live in cooler parts of the open lake.

"We expect they'll congregate a little east of Erie, since temperatures are lower there," he said. "Steelhead tend to be more in the west. Of course, this is a pilot program, a work in progress, so we'll have to wait to see where they'll actually go."

Fry are being raised now at the Linesville hatchery with disease-free fertilized eggs from New York State, which maintains a popular brown trout fishery in lakes Erie and Ontario.

"New York's Lake Ontario fishery is really great and has been for years," Murray said. "We're looking to create something like it here, but on a smaller scale."

Steelhead guide and author John Nagy applauds the idea.

"It's very exciting when you unexpectedly hook up with one of those [browns] when fishing for steel," he said. "Fisherman specifically targeting browns in the fall should look for them in faster runs and shallow pocket water areas, which they prefer over slower moving pools and runs."

Anglers old enough to have fished Erie more than 30 years ago will remember when Coho salmon were the big draw. Cohos were introduced in 1968 -- seven years after the first steelhead were planted -- and they dominated the fishery until 1992 when poor egg survival and low angler returns prompted the agency to shift its focus to steelhead. The Coho program ended in 2003.

"The old timers remember the salmon runs," Murray said, "and some anglers have been asking us for a little more diversity again."

Avid Pittsburgh steelheader Bob Bukk is keeping an open mind.

"Friends of mine have caught the occasional wayward brown trout in the Erie tribs, and the variety would be interesting," he said. "My concern is their impact on the food chain and the watershed itself. As long as the fish commission studies it thoroughly, it would be great."

I wanted to post regarding one of my most recent trips into Erie for the Chrome monsters. We arrived at Elk around 0830 to find clear water but olive green water in the deeper sections. We used flies and sacks all day. I managed to bring to land at least 30 fish. I never had a day so good. We found a spot holding at least 200 fish. We fished an upper part of Elk around Follies end. I will be adding some short videos to my blog in the next few days. The weather has changed and so will the creek and river conditions. Keep the reels screaming and Happy New Year to all.

fished a trib in Ohio today with my daughter. We started out at 12:00 Pm and fished till 4:00pm. I used egg sacks and she used single egg patterns below me. We had a great day. We landed about 15 fish. She used orange and Chart single eggs and I used brown trout in all colors. The main big waters should be fishing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Eugene and I made the trip up into P.A for the day to search for new water. We found 20 mile and all the tribs high and muddy. We drove Rt 5 almost all the way back into Ohio viewing 20,16,7,4 Walnut and Elk. We also checked all the tribs in Ohio on the East side. I fished the Chagrin River in Ohio with Steve Wheeler. We found fish in all the usual places. We fished the upper section of the river all the way up to the dam. We fished the lower section of Walnut today. The water was low and clear. We found fish in all the deep cuts below the crowds. We saw groups of guys and fished below them using orange single eggs and white sucker spawn. We then fished two sections on Elk and found fish in the same spots in the deeper runs and holes. New York Outing

We recently headed up into the great state of New York. We arrived Saturday morning around 0430. We started on Oak Orchard and never left for two days. We located a spot along the upper stretch. We all 10 of us spread out along the river for a couple of great days. We fished using the usual and ended up with the pics below. The water on Oak was clear but we had a good number of fish move in just a few days before we arrived. We managed to take about 50 Browns total between all of us. We also fished Eighteen mile on Monday but not the same numbers as on Oak. I have attached some pics. I still have a few more pics to add later. Keep the reels screaming.

I was out all weekend fishing Elk Creek P.A. The water is very low the lowest I have seen it in years. They do have fish but not the numbers as in the past. I wanted to post regarding the Ashtabula River Ford. Recently this area has been fished very hard by everyone. I would like to thank all those who did not read the signs posted by OCBS causing this area to be closed. This area is now off limits posted no trespassing fishing or hunting. Some local guys want to blame it on Ohio and P.A Guides. I just want people to know I do not have dogs that go out with me on trips. I do not fish in posted areas with clients. Myself and staff have a leave no trace policy. We are all able to read and don't impersonate ODNR. Those who could not read did violate the homeowners rights and failed all fisherman not just steelheaders. We as fisherman should respect all others on the tribs. We all need to have the same leave no trace policy. Keep the reels screaming.

8/17/08 Steelhead Season

Well the steelhead season is about to begin and has begun for some. We have been having cold temps at night and cold rain and that has brought some chrome into the lower sections of the tribs. I will be selling some materials and flies in the near future. The flies will be a selection in a fly box. I also have a bunch of fly tying material if anyone is interested. I just wanted to drop a line and let you know like they say on 12 mile it's not over yet. We have been hitting the big tribs and finding big fish. Today one of my guides landed a 17+ fish. I have spoken to a bunch of guys and they are having a great time. We all have our own thoughts regarding this great fish. You have to remember to give back not only take. Keep the reels screaming.

Thanks for the awesome day. I have been fly fishing for a couple of years and have a lot to learn which is why this was so beneficial to me. Since that day I have gone out 4 more times and used what I learned to average 10-12 hook-ups per time which is a lot better then my typical 1-3 hook-ups. The time you spent with my son Tyler was invaluable to his interest and knowledge of fishing. It will insure a lot more father and son time in the future. I look forward to getting out again with you.

Thanks for arranging our first Steelhead fly fishing trip on the Grand river with George. My son Marcus and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience mainly because of the friendly expert instruction we received . George took us to a great location which happened to be loaded with the most beautiful fish. Thanks to his great attention and instruction, he had my son hooking' up with monster sized trout from the time we arrived until we literally had to pull the boy out of the river! We have been out in search of the silver beast. We found them. We have been having great results in Ohio using streamers and egg patterns. I have attached a few pictures of recent trips. We took a bunch of new guys and gals out and these are the new addicts.

We fished the Grand River in the morning with a bunch of nice fish all over. We fished until after a good lunch and then went to another trib. Upon arriving to the next trib we found nice fish in the deep sections and on the beds. We did manage to get a few fish and I have attached a couple of pics. Keep the reels screaming

We fished the Grand River in Ohio on 4/10/08 and found a bunch of nice fresh fish. We had a great day using wooly buggers and big egg sucking leaches. The water had a tink and good flow but was clearing on this day. The sun was high and the food was great. Brian who is an avid hunter cooked up some great food. We had a wild game feast cooked on the side of the river. I have attached a few pics. The water was looking real good this day. Keep the reels screaming
